3 FEATURES PARENTS ARE LOOKING FOR IN SCHOOL BATHROOMS

Conduct your school tours with confidence

Would you feel comfortable showing off your school’s bathroom facilities during a school tour? Unfortunately for most, the answer is a loud resounding no.

You might be thinking, “thank goodness we’ve never had a parent investigate the state of our bathrooms – and they never will!”

However, the state of school bathrooms is a growing concern for Australian parents. In May 2022, the NSW P&C Vice President Yvonne Hilsz told a parliamentary inquiry, “It is absolutely disgraceful, the toilets our children have to go to the bathroom in.” Hillsz explained that some students were developing urinary tract infections due to holding their bladder out of fear of using the school’s bathroom facilities.

With social media trends and platforms popping up like Tik Tok, students often find that the bathroom is the perfect location to shoot viral content away from teachers’ watchful eyes. As a result, the state of your school’s bathroom is being documented and distributed at alarming rates.

More and more, parents are becoming aware of the standards of their children’s school bathrooms. Here are three bathroom features that parents care about and will have you conducting your school tours with confidence:

1. Relaxing environment

Having bathroom facilities catering to various age groups is a significant factor in assessing school bathrooms for parents. It can be intimidating for younger students to share the bathroom with older students, who can be rough and noisier in these environments. Schools must ensure that there is a wide variety of facilities that cater to these different age groups.

2. Safety

This may seem like an obvious one (especially for parents), but like all humans, students will refuse to use the bathroom if they feel vulnerable. You’d be surprised how many school bathrooms don’t have proper locks on their doors or for that matter, doors that actually function.

3. Age appropriate bathrooms

With the excitement of the playground and highly interactive classroom environments, some students find it hard to settle enough to use the bathroom. As such, it’s essential to ensure that bathrooms are calming and relaxing for students to take care of business.
